MITCHELL REPORT - D DAY - Thursday - 2pm

If you haven’t completed your Mitchell Report Fantasy Draft -

and you’re way behind, by the way –

you’d better get started on it. As in now.

As in immediately.

Put down the remote and wipe the buffalo wing sauce off your fingers. Make up an excuse for your boss…or become much faster at flipping your computer screen. The names are going to become public tomorrow, Dec. 13. Major League Baseball just issued a release saying a press conference will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. (What, you were expecting a Howard Johnsons?)

This press conference isn’t to announce the Devil Rays changing their nickname to Rays. It isn’t to help Eric Gagne count his $10 million from the Brewers and determine how much that’ll amount to per blown save next season.

This is about steroids.

There are two schools of thought here:

1). The report will contain so many big names, it’ll leave our heads spinning. If my hair didn’t already curl by itself, this would take care of it for me.

2). The report will be so flimsy, you couldn’t balance a nickel on it. My guess is we’re going to see future Hall of Famers on there, guys who were adored by fans, or at least respected.

I see kids tearing posters off their walls, or their parents doing it for them, I see fans boycotting Opening Day. I see so many asterisks sprinkled all over the record book, it’ll look like someone left it outside during a snowstorm. But then I gather myself and imagine leniency coming from the commissioner’s office. I see guys getting the proverbial slap on the wrist. I see fans shrugging, saying, “I told you so” and complaining about the price of beers at the ballpark.

And I finally see this issue being put to rest.

At least, that’s what I’m hoping for.

I’m hoping that the game is too big to be brought down by a bunch of guys who wanted to get bigger.
