It’s Not All Billick’s Fault

Brian Billick is a lousy play caller.  He can’t pick quarterbacks.  He can’t coach offense.  He can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.

I don’t know about that last one, but Baltimore football fans are pretty certain the first three comments are true.  Well, it’s not ALL Billick’s fault.  That’s all I’m saying.

While serving as fill-in host the last few days on the Mark Viviano show, I took many calls on the topic of the Ravens’ offense.  Right now they are ranked 15th in yards per game on offense, 19th in team QB rating, 25th in points per game and 27th in yards per play on offense.

What I can’t come to terms with in my mind is how could Billick’s offense in Minnesota put up so many points and this one put up so few ?

I contend some of it is on the players.  The Ravens don’t have, nor have they almost ever had, many dynamic offensive players.  A big-time quarterback could overcome a lot of shortcomings.  But the Ravens have never had one.

And one reason for that is the lack of acquiring those type players.   That goes on Ozzie Newsome and the front office.  Since the Ravens moved to Baltimore, in the draft’s first three rounds, they have selected 15 players on defense and 14 on offense.

They just haven’t produced the quality playmakers on offense with some of those high picks.  Remember the likes of Jay Graham, Patrick Johnson, Travis Taylor and Chris Redman.  They did score with Jamal Lewis and Todd Heap.

But the point is, when assesing the Ravens bleak offense, there is plenty of blame to go around.  None of it falls all on person.  It’s not ALL Billick’s fault.

That’s all I’m saying.
