Oh B-Rob, I still like ya but …
I know it’s been a while blogger fans, but here I go again …
Brian Roberts public apology was part of the domino effect of players coming forward. It was concise, sincere, and honest. And I take him at his word. But was the apology necessary? I mean, the apology is inherent in the admission. It’s implied. Unless your statement was something to the fact of, “I did steriods and I don’t regret it. They work great and I plan on using them in the future …” then I assume you aren’t pleased with what you’ve done.
A statement answering more of the why, the how you got them, the when and where, would have done much more of a service to yourself, the fans and baseball. Furthermore, what do you plan to do to atone for it? Murderers can apologize, but they still go to jail. What happens to B-Rob now? Mostly likely a trade out of town and a free ticket to bury this whole ugly thing … at least for him.
My opinion of Brian Roberts hasn’t changed at all. I still like him as a person, a player, and an Oriole. I just can’t help by think that the apology is hogwash. I mean, let’s say for a moment that his “good friend” Larry Bigbie leaves his name out of the Mitchell Report. Does Roberts make the same apology to fans for doing wrong? Or does it stay buried deep in the closet? That’s called being truly sorry. Everyone is sorry when they are caught. That same wrongness he felt right after the needle came out of his buttocks, should have driven him to an apology then, not now.
Baseball will move on from this … like every black eye to every sport or every portion of American life. 2008 will bring new life and a freedom that baseball is much purer now than it has ever been. There is no need to apologize for that.
