Rogue Ref
Well it has been a long time… I have so much to say and not enough time to say it… There are a lot of topics I want to address… The Orioles, specifically as baseball’s trade deadline comes and goes… The Ravens… my thoughts from camp….
And I would like to talk a little about disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who was sentenced earlier this week to 15 months in prison. His sentence has been described as light, and Donaghy’s lawyers are thrilled with the decision. They put on the stand an expert in ”gambling addictiont”, who urged compassion for Mr. Donaghy because he supposedly had no control over his gambling habits…
Now before I go on… I want to say that I obviously recognize that addictions are real, particularly those caused by various substances. But, Donaghy didn’t know the difference between right and wrong?? We should feel sorry for Donaghy?? He didn’t know it was wrong when he started meeting with the Mafia? Gambling is the ultimate sin in professional sports… Donaghy used his position as an NBA official to gain an advantage when placing wagers. He tipped off friends on games. He jeopardized the safety of himself and his family. And he seriously jeopardized the integrity of professional sports.
I have zero sympathy for him… I do feel badly for the thousands of fans who bought expensive tickets to NBA games thinking what they were seeing was real and not fixed. I do feel badly for the coaches who lost their jobs because he purposefully made the wrong call to change the outcome of games. And I do feel badly for the player who worked his ass off in the offseason only to have the game thrown.
It is called accountability… and Donaghy, since the day he was busted, has thrown out every excuse in the book… Enjoy the 15 Tim… My liscense plate needs work….
