Scanning the Sportsworld
Time for a few thoughts as we start another week in the world of sports.
Can the New England Patriots go 16-0 ? Today, less than 24 hours after their romp over Dallas, some may say yes. Every year, though, it seems, some team dominates early and the 16-0 talk begins. Writers start to interview members of the 1972 Dolphins to get their take on this hot team and right about then, they lose.
With ten games left, New England will play five games vs. teams with a current winning record. Someone will beat them, they may even lose two or three, but right now they look as dominant as anyone has in a long time.
Tom Brady, with 21 TD passes, is ahead of Payton Manning’s record pace, when he threw 49 TD’s in 2004. And the Pats right now are averging 38.3 points per game, ahead of the pace of Minnesota which scored a league-record 556 points (with the help of a genius) in 1998. That Vikings team averaged 34.8 points per game.
It was at least a little suprising to see the Orioles dump Leo Mazzone as pitching coach. We all expected the club’s ERA to be better than 29th in MLB when he took over, but 29th it is, a very poor performance by any standard.
Dave Trembley should be allowed to pick his guys for his staff. For whatever reason, Leo, a delightful guy to just sit and talk baseball with, could not seem to get along with some others. But his gruffness didn’t hamper Atlanta pitchers from success so why didn’t it work here ?
Maybe his downfall was Daniel Cabrera’s in-ability to improve. He certainly should get some credit for the emergence of Erik Bedard and Jeremy Guthrie.
The O’s have lost a good pitching coach, one who will emerge with success again and probably soon. Just hope it’s not in New York.
We don’t know who will manage the Yankees in 2008, but we do know that righty Joba Chamberlain, will be in New York’s rotation next season. Over the weekend, George Steinbrenner’s son, Hank, was quoted as saying he will “insist” that Chamberlain be in the rotation then.
Nice to see Hank taking charge already. Can you imagine the uproar here if Peter Angelos or one of his sons, made a similar statement about the O’s rotation ?
