Spring Time in BMORE

Written by Brett Hollander on March 26th, 2008 @ 12:56 pm

I wish we could save this weather for Opening Day….

Oh… how I love spring time in Baltimore. I used to refer to it as “the trilogy”: Opening Day, Preakness, and the College Lacrosse Final Four (when it was in town).

Speaking of Preakness… the Florida Derby is this Saturday, which marks the real countdown to the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness. I love horse racing and will follow it as best I can. This spring I hope to blog it and broadcast about it.

Horse racing is also a serious political issue for me…. All I will say is that I want to see Pimlico and Maryland Racing return to glory.  Pimlico will be open for a grand total of 12 weeks this year.

In some ways, Preakness is the best day of the year.  (Last year, because of college graduation, I was unable to attend for the first time in about six years.) There is nothing quite like it. About 110,000 of my closest friends squeeze  into an oval for 10 hours of absurdity.

Preakness 2008 presents a bit of a dilemma for me. The question is… am I too old and too mature to  indulge  anymore? Indeed, I may actually have to work on Preakness Day, possibly in regard to the Orioles, at the track, or the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament.  And, if I am able to attend, where shall I sit?  Is it time for me to move from the glorious infield to the more refined atmosphere of the grandstands? This is a topic that I have been debating with my friends.

It is certainly a different world in the grandstands. with different people. One friend called me a “quitter” and another said “I’ll see you there when I’m 40.” What do you think?
