The trashiest romance novel ever played out on TV…

WOW!  Was anyone as big a loser as me and watched pretty much the first 2-plus hours of the congressional hearings??? Does anyone have a job that would allow them to?  Eh, call it a different version of rounds 1 and 2 of March Madness! … Anyway, today was interesting.  It was a showdown between Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee.  You could almost envision Roger on the mound and McNamee in the batters box.  In the end, I don’t think we actually got anywhere with this whole thing, but more on that later.

When you look at how things shook out this morning and afternoon, it was clear to see who believed whom, who took sides, and who was indifferent.  Reps. Henry Waxman and Elijah Cummings were against Roger … Rep. Dan Burton was backing the Rocket all the way.  Somewhere in between all the alleged lies, needles, bloody pants, and tape recordings we know that both Clemens and McNamee dug in deeper against one another.  And it got ugly in doing so.  For two men who were once buddies and co-workers, they now probably can’t stand to be in the same room together.

Speaking of friendship … Andy Pettitte … I think he and Roger are still friends, but I am not sure if the Pettitte’s will be at Rocket’s house for Thanksgiving dinner!  Clemens says that they will still be friends after this, but it will be hard.  After all, every single congressman and congresswoman in that room unanimously agreed on one thing … Andy Pettitte told the absolute truth, was mistaken about nothing, and has a free pass into heaven immediately upon his death!

So what do we know now, that we didn’t know yesterday?  From my vantage point, pretty much nothing.  Roger stood by his story, McNamee did the same.  I think McNamee’s reputation was more scarred after today, or at least as scarred as Clemens is.  McNamee was a proven and admitted liar today.  Can’t say that about Roger.  Clemens had most of the people not necessarily on his side, but not against him either.

Lastly, I really can’t stand all of this.  This is a PERSONAL issue with the commissioner, major league baseball and the government.  It is really about two men.  Two of the greatest men to ever lace up baseball cleats, Clemens and Barry Bonds.  Unfortunately, I think the only way to truly put a rest to all this is to have those two men punished some how.   That’s truly the injustice in my opinion.  We should just be moving forward, not backward.  Trying to figure out how to re-adjust, re-fix, and re-write the past 15 or so years of baseball is a task without a solution.
