From The Dallas Morning News:

While a number of speakers — such as Railroad Commission chairman Michael Williams and Mike Huckabee — have praised the advance of Barack Obama and what it means towards a colorblind society, at least one vendor hasn’t gotten the message.Obama Button0001.JPG

At the Texas Republican state convention, a booth hosted by Republicanmarket was selling a pin Saturday that says: If Obama is President will we still call it the White House.

There were other pins that weren’t necessarily conveying the positive, inclusive, united front that has been portrayed during the convention. One said, “Press 1 for English. Press 2 for Deportation” and another, “I will hold my nose when I vote for McCain”.

Tim Russert: 1950-2008

Written by Troy on June 15th, 2008 @ 9:06 pm

tim3.jpg

“If it’s Sunday…it’s Meet The Press.”

That’s how most of my Sundays over the last few years have started. My weekend ritual ALWAYS includes Meet The Press…usually over bacon and waffles in front of my TV.

I recall waking up in a panic, (like most people would do on a Monday) 2 or 3 Sundays ago, thinking I might have missed a precious moment of one of my signature shows.

Tim Russert is one of my favorites…I didn’t think there were many more people on this planet who enjoyed politics…let alone the 2008 election more than I did.

I’ve been wondering over the last few days what Tim Russert would’ve thought about the wall to wall coverage of his untimely passing…my guess is that he would’ve disapproved…probably wouldn’t have wanted to be the center of all this attention.

But I am glad, if anything good can be said about this sad moment, that his love for life, family, and his work have been highlighted over this Father’s Day weekend.

Big Russ his dad, and Luke his son, were the center of his world, and you can feel that love through his words, and his friends words, even after his passing. I can only hope to be that kind of son, and father myself…Tim Russert seems to have set the standard for excellence yet again.

My Sundays won’t be the same anymore…

UPDATE:

Wake for Tim Russert, former NBC News Bureau Chief and Moderator of “Meet the Press.”

(Me, my son Brandon, and my father, Jay.  30 May 2003)

I hope all the dads, (and mom’s that earned their stripes as dad’s) enjoy this special day!

As we’ve seen even in the news, every day is precious…take some time out to let dad know how much he really means to you…

And let him have the big steak this time!

Washington: The Making of the American Capital

Written by Troy on June 13th, 2008 @ 6:20 pm

I’m a fan of history, and I’m always facinated by learning things as I get older, that I feel I should’ve known when I was younger!

Fergus M. Bordewich’s new book Washington: The Making of the American Capital looks like another oppertunity to lear a little something.

Like:

-According to history, Washington was built largely by slaves and con men.

-The Capital was slated to be built in the free state of Pennsylvania, but ended up further south in a ”backroom compromise”.

-The creation of the district was the personal obsession of George Washington at the end of his life.

Friday, Howard Co. Executive (and star of The Wire) Ken Ulman joined us on the show!

Written by Troy on June 13th, 2008 @ 5:51 pm

On December 4, 2006, at the age of 32, Ken Ulman was sworn in as Howard County Executive – the youngest County Executive ever elected in the State of Maryland.

As County Executive he is focusing on key areas, such as public safety and health, education and the environment, and strengthening the excellent quality of life Howard County is known for. Ken announced plans to make Howard County one of the first counties in the country to offer affordable access to health care for uninsured residents.

According to a Baltimore Sun article on September 13, 2007, “the move would put prosperous Howard in the forefront of the national debate about the availability of health care.”

Ken introduced the Healthy Howard Plan, offering participants six visits to physicians each year along with individual health care coaches. The ambitious low-cost plan, designed so it can be adapted elsewhere in the country, will begin in July 2008 with plans to enroll 2,000 people in the first year.

Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum 10th Anniversary!

Written by Troy on June 12th, 2008 @ 5:17 pm

banneker1.jpgbanneker2.jpg

Dedicated on June 9, 1998, the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum in Baltimore County was the culmination of almost two decades of research, planning, development, construction, and struggle to re-establish the homestead of Benjamin Banneker, the first renowned African-American man of mathematics, and science.

Benjamin Banneker first achieved national acclaim for his scientific work in the 1791 survey of the Federal Territory (now Washington, D.C.). At age 22, in the mid-1750s, Banneker created the first all-American-made wood clock of this colonial region. But perhaps he is best known for his six almanacs published between 1792 and 1797. He has been noted also for his exchange of letters with Thomas Jefferson on the equality of men and the “injustice of the State of Slavery.”

The Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum, established on the very land purchased by Robert and Mary Banneker in 1734, serves as an educational institution to preserve the history of Benjamin Banneker, as well as the cultural and natural history of early American times. The Museum offers an array of special events in history, visual and performing arts, science and the environment. exhibition and firm screenings are regular on-going programs of the Museum.

Most of the 142-acre Banneker Park is stream valley woodland, dedicated to the conservation of wildlife habitat and the preservation of the natural history of our land. This historic park features panoramic nature trails, archaeological sites, and living history areas which recreate the colonial farm and life of the Bannekers.

The Banneker Museum is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary Saturday, June 14th, 2008 from 12pm-3pm. Check it out!

Hey…I’m on AOL Radio!

Written by Troy on June 10th, 2008 @ 11:13 pm

aol.jpgtjshow1.jpg

 From USA Today:

AOL is revamping its popular online radio service Tuesday, adding streams from all 140 CBS-owned radio stations and upgrading its player to add more functions and expand the service’s reach.

The addition of CBS stations will bring a number of highly rated news, talk and sports channels such as WFAN in New York to AOL’s online radio service, replacing a previous arrangement AOL had with XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc.

The deal with AOL also jump-starts CBS Radio’s efforts to build up online audiences. David Goodman, the head of digital media and integrated marketing at CBS Radio, said the deal could double the total amount of people listening to streams from CBS stations during peak periods. Today, that figure can be as high as 125,000, he said.

Goodman says he expects online business to be a “huge growth area” for CBS stations following their integration into the AOL radio player, though he declined to give specific forecasts.

The CBS stations will continue to offer listeners audio streams through their own websites. CBS’ music stations are also planning a separate customizable music player called Play.it later in the summer.

FM Talk 105.7 is also available and streaming live at http://music.aol.com/radioguide/bb.

Check it out, and tell someone to check out The Troy Johnson Show!
